Practical Driving Test
At the beginning of the test you will
be required to read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 - 21metres
(depending on the plate type, since 2001). Before moving off on the
test you will be asked two show me/tell me questions. The test
will last approximately 40 minutes, consist of driving on a
variety of roads including dual carriageways, over a course
of about 6.5 miles.
From the 4th October 2010, candidates in all categories of practical driving tests will have to demonstrate they can manage without intervention by driving independently during the test. This involves driving for about 10 minutes, either following a series of directions, following traffic signs or a combination of both. The examiner may also help candidates to be clear about their routes by showing them a diagram.
The Driving Standards Agency is assuring potential candidates that newspaper claims; pass rates will fall when independent driving is introduced have been disproved by trials showing no significant fall in the pass rate. The cost and duration of tests will remain unchanged.
Car test candidates (category B) will only have to complete one of the three reversing manoeuvre options, instead of two, but an emergency stop exercise (controlled stop) will still be conducted in one of three tests. Manoeuvres in other test categories will be unchanged.
Driving test candidates should aim to
make as few driving faults as possible. A high standard of driving
is expected and is needed to pass the practical test.
Please note: driving test routes will no longer be published.
DSA fee £62.00 weekdays; £75.00 weekends (candidates should seek advice from their instructor before booking a test).
Mock Tests
Apollo Driving school carry out periodic
mock tests to ensure candidates are ready to take the practical
test. Candidates must have a realistic chance of passing before
booking a test.
